While September marks the end of summer and the beginning of football season, it is also important to note that it is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. Our own Dr. Khetan provides some insight into prostate cancer awareness and screening techniques:
“It is amazing to think, but 13 out of 100 men after age 65 will have prostate cancer. It is a cancer that we can screen for to see if it is active with a blood test and with an evaluation on your physical exam.”
From labs, physicians assess the value for PSA (prostate specific antigen). If your PSA levels are elevated or trending up, your physician may want you to undergo an evaluation with MRI and/or a urology consult. If you need a biopsy performed, information obtained from the biopsy including a value called the Gleason Score is used to help you and your doctor decide on the best treatment.
If you are interested in learning your risk levels, visit Zero Prostate Cancer to take their quiz. Hoping all of the men out there are staying healthy and if you have a question about your health, please contact your Preferred Health Physician.
